Rules-based VIX strategy: uses SPY’s short-term RSI to time when to own VIX funds (ZVOL for quick spikes, VXZ for mid-term moves) or stay in PULS (cash-like). Skips entries when UVXY shows vol is overheated; blends 2–10 day signals daily.

Goal: profit from moves in the VIX (the market’s “fear index”). Each day it reads SPY’s 2–10 day RSI (a 0–100 speedometer of recent gains/losses).
- If RSI < 25 (market stressed): buy ZVOL (leveraged short‑term VIX) unless UVXY’s RSI > 70 (vol overheated); then hold PULS (cash‑like).
- If RSI > 80 (market very calm/hot): buy VXZ (mid‑term VIX).
- Else: hold PULS.
Blends these signals (tilted to shortest lookbacks) and rebalances daily.

Out-of-sample edge: 22.9% annualized vs 16.3%; Sharpe ~2.30 vs ~1.0; drawdown 5.7% vs 18.8%. A rules-based VIX timing strategy with a cash overlay delivers higher risk-adjusted gains and lower downside than the S&P 500.
I wanted to create a very simple strategy that earns from VIX. I use mid-term volatility ETFs to reduce variability the size of movements. SPY RSI predicts whether to short or go long VIX Mid-Term Futures ETPs. Additionally, since this uses a fairly unpopular set of ETPs, it doesn't conflict with many other symphonies for wash sales, etc. To back test further, use SVXY instead of ZVOL. Future improvements research could include SVIX and UVIX.
