Once a month, it checks the past month’s return of an oil futures ETF (DBO). If oil has been rising, it owns DBO to ride the trend. If oil has been falling, it moves to a safety mix: inflation‑protected Treasuries (TIP), gold (GLD), and 3–7 year Treasuries (IEI). Steadier assets get bigger weights.
Monthly trend check on oil: own DBO after a positive month; otherwise hold a defensive blend of TIP, GLD, and IEI sized by recent stability to cushion oil downturns.
Out-of-sample edge: ~15.50% annualized return vs SPY 14.72%, Calmar 0.465, Sharpe 0.684. Oil-trend tilt with hedge diversification offers upside and risk control; 1,700+ backtested days. Note higher drawdowns in stressed markets (~33%).
Oil, but smarter. Buying and holding an oil ETF can be less than ideal because oil ETFs typically invest in oil futures and can suffer from negative roll yields. To help, this symphony adds in smart timing. If oil has recently been doing well, it holds an oil futures ETF. If not, it takes it easy with low-risk assets like gold and short-term treasury bonds. This symphony was developed by Composer. By choosing to trade this strategy, you understand that the strategy employs ETFs, and that you understand the associated risks of trading, holding, and costs associated with ETFs, and also leveraged ETFs. Before investing in ANY strategy containing an ETF, please review the relevant ETF prospectus.
