A simple, rules-based VIX strategy: use SPY’s short-term moves to time mid‑term volatility. Buy a “short‑vol” fund (ZVOL) after dips, switch to a “long‑vol” note (VXZ) after extreme strength, and go to ultra‑short bonds (PULS) when volatility spikes.

Daily it reads SPY as a market “stress gauge.” If SPY looks briefly weak/oversold (very low recent readings or below its 4‑day avg), it buys ZVOL (a fund that benefits when volatility calms). If SPY looks extremely hot, it buys VXZ (benefits if volatility bounces). If UVXY is spiking, it parks in PULS (cash‑like). Otherwise it stays in PULS.

Out-of-sample: about 20% annualized return vs SPY’s 16.9%, Sharpe ~1.71 vs 1.01, drawdown ~7.5% vs ~18.8%, and beta ~0.38—providing stronger, smoother upside with less downside than the S&P 500.
I wanted to create a very simple volatility strategy that earns from VIX. I use mid-term volatility ETFs to reduce variability. Additionally, since this uses a fairly unpopular set of ETFs, it doesn't conflict with many other symphonies for wash sales etc.
